Whether you have 20 minutes for a quick stroll or all day for a backcountry expedition, find the right trail length for your visit to The Forest of Nisene Marks State Park.

Short Walks & Short Loops (Under 2 Miles)
Quick, gentle walks perfect for families, casual picnics, or short visits.

  • Waggoner Overlook Trail

    • Distance: 0.1 miles (one-way) | Est. Time: 5–10 mins

    • Highlights: ADA-compliant paved path leading to a scenic deck overlooking Aptos Creek Canyon.

  • Split Stuff Trail

    • Distance: 0.2 miles (one-way) | Est. Time: 5–10 mins

    • Highlights: Short connecting path near the entrance station showcasing historic hand-split logging timber.

  • Terrace Trail

    • Distance: 0.8 miles (one-way) | Est. Time: 20–30 mins

    • Highlights: Gentle creek-side walk through lush greenery and ferns.

  • Oak Ridge Trail

    • Distance: 0.8 miles (one-way) | Est. Time: 25–35 mins

    • Highlights: Short ridge climb through mixed evergreen and coast live oaks.

  • Buggy Trail

    • Distance: 1.0 mile (round-trip) | Est. Time: 20–30 mins

    • Highlights: Easy, level path near George’s Picnic Area under a shaded second-growth canopy.

  • Vienna Woods Trail

    • Distance: 1.0 mile (one-way) | Est. Time: 25–35 mins

    • Highlights: Connects the upper neighborhood margin down through riparian stream zones to the main canyon.

  • Old-Growth Loop Trail

    • Distance: 1.5 miles (loop) | Est. Time: 45–60 mins

    • Highlights: Ancient virgin redwoods, fern-draped canyon walls, and the "Twisted Grove."

  • Aptos Rancho Trail

    • Distance: 1.8 miles (one-way) | Est. Time: 45–60 mins

    • Highlights: Historic 1833 Mexican land grant route transitioning between open fields and canyon shade.​​​

Moderate Distance Hikes (2 to 6 Miles)
Great half-day outings combining historic logging sites, stream crossings, and moderate elevation gain.

  • Vienna Woods to Old-Growth & Aptos Creek Loop

    • Distance: ~3.0–3.5 miles (loop) | Est. Time: 1.5–2 hours

    • Highlights: Descent from Vienna Drive, virgin redwoods, creek crossing, and canyon climb. (Board Favorite)

  • Loma Prieta Grade Trail

    • Distance: 3.3 miles (one-way) | Est. Time: 1.5–2.5 hours

    • Highlights: Traces the late 1800s steam railway bed past the historic Loma Prieta townsite.

Long Distance & Full-Day Hikes (6+ Miles)
Challenging treks deep into the Santa Cruz Mountains featuring waterfalls, high ridges, and ocean views.

  • Hoffman's Site & West Ridge Loop

    • Distance: ~6.5–7.5 miles (loop) | Est. Time: 3–4 hours

    • Highlights: Historic rail grade, Aptos Creek crossing at Hoffman's logging camp site, and West Ridge singletrack. (Board Favorite)

  • Bridge Creek Trail to Maple Falls

    • Distance: 7.7 miles (round-trip) | Est. Time: 3.5–5 hours

    • Highlights: Singletrack trail following Bridge Creek to a secluded waterfall inside a narrow gorge.

  • Big Stump & West Ridge Loop

    • Distance: ~8.5 miles (loop) | Est. Time: 3.5–4.5 hours

    • Highlights: Steep climb up Big Stump Gap ("The Cutoff") past giant historic stumps and sweeping ridge views. (Board Favorite)

  • Aptos Creek Fire Road

    • Distance: 9.4 miles (one-way to Soquel Demo Forest / 18+ miles RT) | Est. Time: 4–8 hours

    • Highlights: Main park artery along historic railroad grades connecting to the upper forest boundary.

  • West Ridge Trail

    • Distance: 12.0 miles (out-and-back) | Est. Time: 5–6.5 hours

    • Highlights: Quiet backcountry ridge trail with steep elevation gain and primitive forest scenery.

  • Five Finger Falls Trail

    • Distance: 13.8 miles (round-trip) | Est. Time: 6–8 hours

    • Highlights: Flagship backcountry trek past the 1989 Earthquake Epicenter to a hidden 40-foot waterfall.

  • Aptos Creek Fire Road to Sand Point Overlook

    • Distance: 14.2 miles (round-trip) | Est. Time: 5–7 hours

    • Highlights: Steady climb up the main fire road to Sand Point Overlook for panoramic views of Monterey Bay.
