Choose a route suited to your fitness level, terrain preferences, and available time.

Easy Trails

Smooth, mostly flat terrain with minimal elevation gain—ideal for casual visitors and young families.

  • Waggoner Overlook Trail (0.1 mi | 5–10 mins) — ADA-compliant paved path to a canyon view deck.

  • Split Stuff Trail (0.2 mi | 5–10 mins) — Flat connector route highlighting early logging history.

  • Terrace Trail (0.8 mi | 20–30 mins) — Scenic, level path alongside Aptos Creek.

  • Buggy Trail (1.0 mi RT | 20–30 mins) — Peaceful stroll near George’s Picnic Area under a mixed canopy.

Easy to Moderate Trails

Gentle elevation gains or slightly uneven trail surfaces like roots and dirt paths.

  • Old-Growth Loop Trail (1.5 mi loop | 45–60 mins) — Flat to gently rolling loop through ancient redwoods and the "Twisted Grove."

  • Oak Ridge Trail (0.8 mi | 25–35 mins) — Short, steady climb up to a live oak ridge.

  • Aptos Rancho Trail (1.8 mi | 45–60 mins) — Rolling terrain connecting sunny forest edges with shaded canyon flats.

  • Vienna Woods Trail (1.0 mi | 25–35 mins) — Moderate descent/ascent connecting the neighborhood margin to the lower canyon.

Moderate Trails

Longer distances, sustained uphill sections, or singletrack terrain with stream crossings.

Strenuous & Backcountry Trails

Challenging full-day outings featuring significant elevation gain, stream navigation, or long mileage.

  • Bridge Creek Trail to Maple Falls (7.7 mi RT | 3.5–5 hours) — Singletrack trail with log crossings navigating to a hidden waterfall.

  • Big Stump & West Ridge Loop (~8.5 mi loop | 3.5–4.5 hours) — Features a steep climb up Big Stump Gap ("The Cutoff") and high ridge singletrack. (Board Favorite)

  • West Ridge Trail (12.0 mi out-and-back | 5–6.5 hours) — Steep, quiet backcountry ridge trek with continuous climb.

  • Five Finger Falls Trail (13.8 mi RT | 6–8 hours) — Long canyon trek requiring seasonal creek crossings to reach a 40-foot waterfall.

  • Aptos Creek Fire Road to Sand Point Overlook (14.2 mi RT | 5–7 hours) — Sustained climb up the main fire road to sweeping ocean views.
